GB3MA / GB7MA Update (01.12.14)

Saturday was a very long/busy 10 hour day with a complete rework of the antenna systems at site, with assistance from a professional rigger, at advantageous “mates rates”. A new vertical collinear and 2 x new band specific 3 element beams have been installed, along with bandpass filters on 2 m and 70 cm. The DMR breakthrough on GB3MA is greatly improved but it is only a problem during weekdays, so it’s something to keep an eye on.  On Saturday night there were encouraging reports for GB3MA (70 cm FM) from 2E0VVQ (North Manchester), Newcastle-Under-Lyme, Stockport, South Manchester and Bury.

Today GB7MA (2 m DSTAR) was installed. The inaugural contact was with G3SMU (Bolton) and subsequent tests were with G6GYI (Macclesfield) and G0AMU (Manchester).  A number of return visits are planned to optimise the performance of the cavities and later to implement an Internet connection for the gateway to the global D-STAR network. The feeders need to be replaced and some mast related work also needs to be scheduled but first I need to save up a few pennies to cover the cost of the works. Any reports/observations would be very useful over the next couple of weeks.

Cheque Presentation to Walthew House from SRS on behalf of the estate of Harry Arnfield (26.09.14)

ArchivePosts2014_image017

Dear Kay,

Harry Arnfield was the President of Stockport Radio Society for many years. Unfortunately, Harry died on the 10th August 2014 and in his memory the Society wanted to donate £100.

The Executor of his will Mrs Susan Linney, asked us to make the cheque payable to Walthew House, as the blind was one of Harry’s charities.

Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) 18 & 19 October at Linnet Clough Technology Centre Marple (11.09.14)

Many thanks to Tom M0DCG, Andy 2E0GCL, Mike 2E0MPC and Neal 2E0NAL who have already agreed to support the event.

Ian Webster G4IVA, the JOTA operating manager from the Linnet Clough Technology Camp, Marple, has asked SRS if they could provide operators to support the 2014 camp held over the weekend of 18/19 October. A number of the operators from previous years are unavailable through moving away from the area and other commitments.

I have supported the event for a number of years now usually operating CW on the HF bands. The other stations are used for phone activities where the scouts need to exchange messages with other groups around the world

However there are 3 stations set-up. One for 80/40m, one for 20, 17, 15 and 10m, and a VHF/UHF station. Dipoles are used for the LF bands, a Yagi for the HF bands with a yagi and collinear for VHF/UHF. Amplifiers are used on the HF bands.

The operating is to support the scouts wishing to gain their ‘Communications badge’.  They need to observe 20 or so QSOs and also exchange messages with other stations plus they have to demonstrate a good understanding of radio and communications. Some of the questions they are required to answer could be from the Foundation course exam.

Around 200 – 250 scouts plus their leaders attend the camp that is run by a team of about 60 mainly amateurs. While the scouts enjoy the thrill of camping outdoors in October the site is equipped with well-maintained buildings to house the indoor activities associated with the event and midday meals are provided.

The activities take place from 9.00 am on the Saturday morning through to 2.00pm Sunday .  In addition to the radio activities described the weekend is carefully broken up into a timetable I recall from school days when a bell would ring and everyone rushes to their next session. The other sessions are most interesting e.g.:-

Digital photography

Electronic construction

Flight simulator and games

Radio orienteering – you should see the colour of the scouts returning from that!

Robot racer team challenge

Sound studio

IT stages 1 – 5

If anyone else is interested in joining us, even for only a few hours, please let me know asap as attending is not an adhoc arrangement with everyone being invited and provided with the appropriate ID. (Sign of the times I’m afraid)

The Peak Contest Group (The Contesting Arm of SRS) SSB Contest 25 & 26 October & CW Contest 29 & 30 November (11.09.14)

The Peak Contest Group has two contesting events coming up.  The email below is from Bernard G3SHF.  If you are interested in either event please contact Bernard at a society meeting or via treasurer@g8srs.co.uk

Peak Contest Group, the contesting arm of SRS, will be in action again in October and November for the CQWW SSB and CW contests. These are the biggest contests of the year and a golden opportunity to make contacts with some rare countries activated by the more adventurous contest groups. (25/26 Oct for SSB and 29/30 Nov for CW).

The group will be operating from their usual site at Common Barn Farm, Rainow where we enjoy a 1400’ asl take off enhanced by two 80 ft trailer masts to support yagis and dipoles. This is a country location with no mains supplies which means minimal noise!

The contests are 48 hour events where 2 stations are operated concurrently using callsign G5O. Points are gained for each station contacted within one’s own continent and even more points from distant continents. In the final analysis these points are totted up and multiplied by the number of DXCC countries contacted on each band usually resulting in grand scores in the order on millions! As 6 HF bands are used, being on the right band at the right time will antennas pointing in the right direction is key to success.

Much time in planning is spent at The Three Tunnes PH in Hazel Grove over cold beer trying to refine our strategy. Someone has to do it!

With 2 sets of operators being required for 48 hours there is plenty of scope for newcomers to get involved where there is always an experienced op to lend a helping hand. In addition to the actual contest operating much work is required to set up and maintain the stations and all assistance is greatly appreciated.  If you are interested please let Bernard know.

On the Air from QTH – In the Chair Al G0ROW (11.09.14)

Tonight’s on the air will be chaired by Alan G0ROW.  We will be operating on 145.375 +/-.  Come on and give us a shout.  Start time of the net is 7.30pm.

Practical Wireless SOTA VHF weekend 23-25 August 2014 (19 August 2014)

Just a quick reminder that next weekend is the August Bank Holiday weekend and Practical Wireless are encouraging VHF/UHF operators to operate from Summits on the Air on the VHF bands. It’s not a contest, more an excuse to get out and enjoy some portable radio in some great scenery!

Richard G3CWI at SOTABeams has very kindly sponsored some prizes.”

This seems an ideal opportunity for those with modest VHF/UHF gear including alot of those Chinese handhelds to work some local summits on the air which will no doubt be activated over the bank holiday weekend. SOTAwatch is the place to keep an eye on for details of forthcoming activations.

Buddy, Mike and the on the air team were at Tatton Park today for the VW Festival.  We had a trade stand set up in front of ‘Buddy’ with the Tentech Corsair and FT857 on show.  Mike was doing morse and the team were on 145.375 +/-.  We had quite a few people coming to the stand who were previous ‘G’ call signs, but had let their callsign renewal lapse,  A couple of the ‘CBers’ asking questions about converting over to Ham.  We would like to say a big thank you to Mike ‘The Tintwistle Tapper’ for arranging the event, and the team Tony M0SAV, Nigel 2E0CKA, Andy 2E0GCL and Heth (SWL) for assisting in setting the stand up and helping out with the day.  Also thanks to Nigel G0RXA, Rob M0TKT, Lee M0ZPZ, Nigel M6YZZ, John G4GEY and Jack (SWL) for coming and supporting us today.  We are all looking forward to the next outdoor activity that the team can take part in.

Stockport Radio Society Rally 2014 – Saturday 12th July 2014 (12.07.14)

ArchivePosts2014_image023

Today was the day for the Stockport Radio Society Rally.  Kicking off at 7am for traders to unload and set up their goods.  Many of SRS members turned up from 7am to assist on the stands, running the ‘talk in’ station, the stewarding, display the military vehicle, the pics of our rally and of course, the refreshments including the bacon butties.  Doors opened at 10am with a queue starting to appear at 9.30ish.  With a record number of people through the door this year, SRS saw the rally busy from 10am till around 1.30 when people started to disappear.  A great day was had by everyone at the SRS Rally.  We look forward to seeing you all again next year.  Make a note in your diaries for the next date – 2nd Saturday in July 2015 – 11th July 2015.  Click here to view the pics from the rally

Your comments on our rally would be appreciated.  Please either email srswebsite@g8srs.co.uk or comment on the above post will be posted on our facebook page, and whilst you are on the page ‘like’ us to keep you up to with events at the club.

Many thanks to all those that attended the rally.

On the Air from Home QTH – In the Chair Nigel 2E0CKA – running commentary (10.07.14)

The time is 7.30 and the net is about to start with Nigel 2E0CKA in the chair. First to return the call out this evening is Andy 2E0GCL.   Break station just called in Tony M0SAV.  General conversation taking place talking about CB and Motorbikes!!!  Signal reports from Andy to Nigel is 5 and 9. Both 2E0GCL and 2E0CKA are breaking the needle back at M0SAV.  Chatting about the report from Evan and operating on six metres.  2E0GCL letting the net know that he got over to Finland  with a 5 and 8.  Was operational for about 5 hrs when 2E0GCL was on.

Call in from G0ROW good 5 and 9 also a call in from G6GUT coming through loud and strong.  Apologies via G0R0W for Steve who will try and get on towards the end of the net.  G0ROW corrected M0SAV that it was 60metre that he was operating on not 6metres.  Only full licences holders can operate on 60 metres.  There are 11 spaces to transmit on with this band.  Net passed over to G6GUT for his comments.  No reply from his handheld in the garden.

Net back with Andy 2E0GCL / talking to Al G0ROW about his activities on 6 metres.  Conversation now turns to the rally.  We now have a full rally.  Looking at ways of displaying the banners at the VW Rally in Tatton Park.    2E0CKA giving bits of information about events coming up.   G0ROW talking about the events of last night with G6GUT on 40 metres.  G0ROW told to net that he had got through to Angolia on 20metres, St Alina on 15metres and 40 metres was Tazmanian Island.  Still no call back from G6GUT, now back to M0SAV.   Signal report from M0SAV to G6GUT was a 4 and 5.  M0SAV advising how the tables are set out and whose going where.

Andy 2E0GCL  advising that the framework is still in his cellar.  Break station trying to get through M6KHI very scratchy coming through to 2E0CKA, M0SAV taking the reins as he can here him.    M0SAV advising that he has 8 high viz jackets printed with SRS logo so that the stewards will have the vests on, and here’s hoping that all members will come in SRS merchandise, to promote the club.   2E0CKA advising the net about the Aviation Fair at Manchester Airport Viewing Park, and one of the stand holders asking about the SRS club from the fleece that 2E0CKA YXL was wearing.  G6GUT now back on coming through loud and clear.  G6GUT copied the M6 earlier.  2E0CKA advising that the ‘table conga’ on Friday will be starting between 6.30 and 7, and then on Saturday hoping to have the doors open to the traders for setting up from 7am and then Doors open to the general public at about 10am.

G6GUT and 2E0CKA having a laugh about a colourtune that was bought a few years ago.  The talk of ‘crossing the palm with silver’ is now taking place!!!.

Break station coming in from M0TJU mobile from the park.  Net now passing back to 2E0GCL good signals reporting going back and forth.  Conversation back to the colour tunes.  2E0GCL taking technical about tuning cars – not needing fancy gadgets.  Another break station calling in M0ZPZ – Lee – coming through loud and clear.  First time M0ZPZ has called in to the night.  Hopefully not the last time.  A lot of banter going on about the Rally.  M0TJU giving signal reports out to everyone from the park.

Some information that has just come in on email from the Chairman – Stockport Rally – Friday – 6.30pm or earlier to set up. Barrie can set his table up as it’s in the main room. Centre island.  Saturday – 7am – traders advised 7.15 to 7.30 is when we’ll be open. Need talk in station from 7.30 onwards.  All remember to bring charged handhelds for use 2 metres & 70 cms if possible.

Back to 6 metres now with 2E0GCL and M0TJU.  2E0CKA just doing the rounds now back with M0ZPZ.   Still need someone to chair the September and October. The grey cells are affecting everyone tonight with everyone getting their names wrong.   Apologies given on behalf of 2E0CFM who has missed the net due to family business.  Late break station coming in M6YKK Nigel (3).

One last thing for the rally is to request that all members wear their SRS tops and for the ‘female david bailey’ when the camera comes round smile!!

‘Thanks to everyone who has joined in on the net Andy 2E0GCL, Tony M0SAV, Barrie G6GUT, Alan G0ROW, Lee M0ZPZ and Evan M0TJU.

Thanks to Nigel for chairing the net – well done on your first time.

An Introduction to Operating on Six Metres (50mhz) by Evan Duffield M0TJU (10.07.14)

For those who enjoy operating on the higher HF bands and the lower part of VHF, the conditions have not been particularly great overall during the summer so far. Despite some very high recent sunspot counts (reaching an eye-popping 279 early in June) consistent with the present solar maximum, high-speed particle streams from the Sun have been regularly bombarding the Earth in recent weeks, pushing down maximum useable frequencies, and making bands like 10 metres (28-29MHz) eerily quiet. There has been silver lining in the cloud, fortunately, with the six-metre band (50MHz) living up to its reputation as the Magic Band a number of times so far this summer. I have been lucky enough to enjoy a few of those occasions, most notably on the 8th of June.

Many thanks to Evan for writing the report.

‘On Air’ Night – tutor sessi0n with Evan M0TJU – Digimodes (01.06.14)

So far, HF activity nights at Walthew have been voice or CW (Morse) affairs; on 27 May it was the digital’s turn, with live QSOs conducted on the popular digimodes of PSK31 and radioteletype (RTTY). PSK (phase-shift keying) and RTTY, respectively, are characterised by distinctive warbling and jingling, and can be heard usually in the lower ends of the short-wave bands, sandwiched between the Morse and the single-sideband voice regions. The variation of tones of digimode signals is used to convey the ones and zeros that make up a digitised message, which only a computer or teleprinter can decode.

The first of the four contacts we made took place shortly after 8pm local time. Evan Duffield M0TJU did the operating, using his own rig and other equipment to demonstrate the nature of the digimodes, where activity is concentrated on the bands, and how digi QSOs should be conducted. Evan’s equipment included:

Icom IC-7000 transceiver / ‘Signalink USB’ PC-radio interface / MFJ-902 ‘Travel Tuner’ matching unit / Perseus software-defined radio (SDR)

The antenna used throughout the session was the Society’s HF vertical, now fixed on the roof of Walthew House. It made light work of receiving and contacting stations on 40 metres (7000-7200kHz), the band we concentrated on that night. Even with only 50 watts of output power and contending with plenty of QSB (fading)  –  something that can play havoc with the reception of digitised signals – the QSOs made were generally easy. The contacts, which included stations on two IOTA islands, were:

OH0CC         Aland Island (IOTA EU-002)    1912UTC    RTTY      7044kHz

F2YT            France                                 1917UTC    PSK31     7044kHz

S58X            Slovenia                                2003UTC    PSK31    7041kHz

TM4U           Isle Saint Nicolas (EU-094)      2023UTC    RTTY   7044kHz

The Perseus SDR receiver, with its ability to show several hundred kilohertz of bandwidth simultaneously, was used to highlight the main concentrations of digimode activity on various bands.

A follow-up session (not as yet scheduled) will most likely include some operating by the ‘students’.

Contest Alert for 80m CC Data 2nd June 2014 (30.05.14)

Tell them about the QSL card and how it could be of benefit to them, they may even provide a picture and help with the cost of printing.

To claim a certificate for working 10 or more Mills on the Air stations send a minimum of £5.00, which will be donated in full to SPAB, together with your log, to Darran G0BWB g0bwb@g0bwb.com  Taking part in Mills on the Air is a great way to promote our hobby but also to help and publicise the work done by SPAB in keeping alive our industrial heritage.

‘On the Air’ Aerial Testing (06.05.14)

ArchivePosts2014_image031

“Friday 2nd May saw the ‘On the Air’ team assisted by Barry G6GUT, setting up the shack for testing of the new aerial.  Earlier in the week we  installed a Sigma HF360 vertical antenna for use on 3.5MHz to 29MHz, also re-cabled the wire dipole.  All tests were done on VHF/UHF and also through the bands on HF from 3.5MHz to29MHz..  The vertical passed on all bands, although 3.5MHz has a high SWR.

The Western HF10 dipole needs further investigation and will possibly have to be dismantled for checking and repairing.

Our next meeting is on 27th May on digi modes – we will also have the normal 2m net running.   Listen for a call on 145.375 +or _ QRM don’t forget to put this date in your diary.”  –  Here are a few images from the testing night.

Society Meeting Tues 6th May 19.30 – 22.00 (02.05.14)

Our next club meeting takes place on Tuesday 6th May – the theme for the night is  “Transistors” a presentation with with Jim Littler G4HPH & John Shufflebotham 2E0GCX.  New members and visitors are welcome.  Guaranteed a fun filled night.

Edinburgh Morse Kits (08.04.14)

ArchivePosts2014_image034

Hello,  My name is Carl Joyce and my callsign is MM0HJX. I’m starting my own business selling Morse keys in kit form.

I’m in the process of finishing off my website and I have created a resources section with information about Morse code, some practice material, and other bits and pieces including a section on getting help.

In the getting help section I’ve compiled a list of links to local clubs throughout the UK and I’ve added your club to this section. The address for the resource section is http://www.edinburghmorsekits.com/gettinghelp.html.

The resources section is the only part online at the moment and I’m hoping to go live and with the full site at the end of this month. I’m giving 10 x Twin paddle iambic kits away as a website launch promotion if you have club members who are interested in Morse code the information can be found on www.edinburghmorsekits.com and it’s totally free to enter

Thank you for your time,  Kind regards, Carl Joyce

Ofcom Update: Release of spectrum within 143 MHz to 169 MHz (25.3.14)

Ofcom has today published a consultation on the release of around 6 MHz of very high frequency (VHF) spectrum in the 143 to 169 MHz band, which has been returned for civil use.

The consultation summarises responses to an earlier Call for Input on the release of spectrum in England, Wales and Northern Ireland between 143 and 156 MHz spectrum. Today’s document also encompasses spectrum that has been returned for civil use between 168 MHz and 169 MHz. Since the Call for Input was published, this spectrum is now available on a UK-wide basis

The consultation explains Ofcom’s proposed approach to allocating the released spectrum, including a proposal that spectrum be made available on a first-come-first-served basis through Ofcom’s current Business Radio licence products.

Responses to the proposals are invited by 26 May 2014.

YOTA UK July 2014  RSGB | March 21, 2014 (24.3.14)

Having got the RSGB Youngsters on the Air team lined up for their trip to Finland, a UK YOTA event has been given the go-ahead. This is planned to take place on the weekend of the 19 and 20 July.  Other than having a date and knowing that a central place for young members to meet will be needed, the event is pretty much a blank page so please let the TEC Chairman know what kind of thing should be part of a YOTA UK event.  Ideas to tec.chair@rsgb.org.uk as soon as possible please. The RSGB would also like to have some of the older young Members involved in the organising, particularly those that have experience of leadership from cadets, scouts and/or guides. If you are ‘young’, willing and able to help, or know anyone that fits the bill, please get them to contact the RSGB via tec.chair@rsgb.org.uk. News will follow in due course on something very special for a club-based activity for IARU YOTA month in December.

MRR Military on the Air activity (01.03.14)

The aim of the MRR activity nights is to reactivate and use vintage military radio devices, but we’d also like to encourage everybody else without a military background to participate!

If a station consists majorly of former military radio components, it will be considered as a “Military Station”. However, parts of the station, such as the receiver or the antenna, may be commercial components. The activity nights offer the great opportunity to work members and club stations of the MRR in order to obtain the MRR certificate. Logs will be considered as applications for the certificate.  For further information including dates, bands, entry deadline, logging etc click on the link MRR Military

RSGB AFS Contests 2014 (19.1.14)

The twin 80 Metre contests held within a week of each other in January are the traditional curtain raisers to our contest year. Members taking part come together to pool their scores to form teams of four in both the CW and SSB events.

This year familiar callsigns such as G3SHF, M1PTR, G0SYP and others were joined for the first time by members operating as G6UQ from our Walthew House HQ in the SSB leg which took place in the afternoon of Saturday the 18th January.

Armed with a Yaesu FT-920 on loan to the society from Keiron M5KJM, Andy M6GBV and Nigel 2E0CKA with the help of Tony M0SAV, Steve G8YTP, Alan G0ROW and Evan M0TJU made their debut in this annual event.

BBC Stargazing Live (Posted 07.01.14)

BBC Stargazing Live

With the new year celebrations behind us it was time to turn our attentions to the first meeting of the year and as if by magic the BBC provided the ideal subject, Stargazing Live from Jodrell Bank.

With the room suitably laid out “cinema style” and with Freeview Digibox, indoor TV antenna, projector and speakers all connected members gathered to watch this now annual TV extravaganza.

The clock ticked round to 8pm and the programme began as per usual with Prof Brian Cox and Dara O Briain pictured outside Jodrell Bank with the back drop of the famous Lovell Radio Telescope.

Members were enthralled with the subjects covered and in particular the pictures from the Cassini Mission to Saturn, the live pictures of the “Northern Lights” from Tromso with Liz Bonnin on the northern tip of Norway and Mark Thompson’s guides to viewing the night sky.

A fascinating evening really enjoyed by those present and thank you to Evan M0TJU who supplied one of his telescopes to demonstrate and to Tony M0SAV for the following pictures.

Radio Aurora – (Posted 09.01.14)

Just letting people know that a large solar flare that took place on the Tuesday evening (appropriately around the time of the ‘Stargazing Live’ broadcast)  resulted in a sizeable coronal mass ejection, the dense cloud of particles from which is racing towards us. The impact with Earth’s magnetic field is predicted to occur at midday tomorrow UK time (give or take a few hours).

This should trigger ‘radio’ aurora that can be exploited by operators in the more temperate regions of Europe, such as England and Germany. If you have a directional (50MHZ) antenna, align the max. radiation lobe generally north, although sweep from the northwest through to the northeast, if possible, to try to hear other European amateurs. (The reflective auroral band will be lying roughly to the north of us.)

The best time to listen for the aurora – more accurately, hear stations whose signals are bouncing off it – is late in the afternoon (coincidentally, soon after CME is expected to strike) and around midnight local time.

The best band for aurora is generally 6 metres (50MHz), and there will be plenty of Eu stations trying to make auroral contacts on that band tomorrow afternoon and evening. Keep an eye on the 6-metre band spots on DX Summit (link below), and get an idea of who’s contacting who on what frequency and mode and – if you’re lucky – what beam headings are being used. (You will want to see if many G stations make it into the list.)

http://www.dxsummit.fi/CustomFilter.aspx?customCount=50&customRange=50

An example of an aurora contact on 50MHz listed on DX Summit is below. (Note the ‘AU’ or ‘AUR’ between the locators, indicating contact via aurora):

ND0B      50018.0 VE4ARM/B EN07GNEN09MW S4 Au            0237 08 Jan   Canada

There are a number of 50MHz (CW) beacons around northern Europe; G3USF’s beacon list in an Excel spreadsheet form is attached. The beacons that English stations should listen out for are mainly those in southern Scandinavia, Northern Ireland and Scotland, and these are shaded in yellow. (Note that reception of beacons is registered on DX Summit, not just inter-amateur contacts.) These beacons are concentrated in 50.000-50.700 region, but note that many are of low power and don’t use high-gain antennas. Therefore, even if your just listening, you may wish to try your luck getting regular amateur stations, many of which will be churning out high levels of ERP. CW operation is likely to be between 50.080 and 50.100, and SSB activity between 50.130 and 50.200, but may go outside those bounds.

An aurora-reflected signal will sound unusual; for CW, the dits and dahs will sound like pulsating static; for SSB, voices will sound raspy and fluttery.

As to the possibility of also getting a visual aurora in these parts, there is a chance that may happen. Not to be a downer, but the moon will be quite bright tomorrow evening and will not set until about 2am. Outlets like the BBC and Lancaster Uni’s AuroraWatch (https://www.facebook.com/aurorawatchuk)%20should should have info on UK sighting opportunities.
